Sermon Questions

  • What fears still hold you back from trusting that God delights in providing for you? How might letting go of fear change the way you live, give, or love others?
  • In what ways is God inviting you to be “ready”—not just in belief, but in action? What would being spiritually alert look like in your daily life this week?
  • What “possessions” or attachments—material or emotional—might God be gently trying to remove from your life? How is the “Holy Thief” at work within you, creating space for freedom and grace?
  • How does seeing God as a servant reshape your understanding of leadership, power, and discipleship? What might it look like for you to imitate Christ’s posture of service in your community?

Sermon Questions

  • Why did the disciples ask Jesus to teach them to pray, especially considering they were already religious?
  • What does Jesus’ response to the disciples’ request reveal about his relationship with God and his desire to teach them?
  • How does Luke’s portrayal of Jesus’ own prayer life inform our understanding of his teaching on prayer?
  • What if Jesus’ teaching on prayer is less about how we pray and more about to whom we pray?
  • Amid our spoken and unspoken realities, where might the Spirit be moving in our faith community?

Sermon Intro

Sermon Questions

  • What does it mean for our church to “embody Christ” as we prepare the next generation? In what ways are we already doing this, and what might we need to let go of or begin anew to become a church that future generations will call home?

  • If the saints and ancestors of our faith—especially those who built Blaine Memorial through trials like war, displacement, and invisibility—could speak to us today, what do you think they would urge us to do in this moment? What lessons from their faithfulness are we called to carry forward?

  • What are the most pressing challenges facing our church today in passing the faith on to the next generation (e.g., cultural shifts, trust in institutions, identity, belonging)? What fears or resistance might we need to confront together?

  • According to today’s scriptures, God has already planted something within us—Christ in us, the hope of glory (Colossians 1:27). What resources, relationships, and spiritual gifts has God already given our community to face today’s challenges? How might we activate them with courage?

A 1,000 paper cranes symbolizes longevity, happiness and good fortune.

Thousand Paper Crane Project

The Archives Committee is asking church members to come together to pray for peace by folding 1000 paper cranes as we commemorate the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the end of World War II, and the closing of the World War II US incarceration camps which imprisoned Japanese Americans.

The folding of 1000 origami cranes has come to symbolize a prayer for peace.

We would like members to fold the origami cranes during social hour after service, in Sunday School, in your small groups, and at your homes and other spaces. We can give you some origami paper or you can use your own origami paper (6-inches by 6-inches). Please give or send your origami cranes to the church office as soon as you finish or by July 20, 2025.

Your generous donations make a huge impact on our neighbors!

We are Blessed and Broken: Returning from #pnwac25

Dear Blaine – Your delegates, fellow church members, and Senior Pastor AND our new Associate Pastor have returned from this year’s Pacific Northwest Annual Conference Sessions in Bothell, Washington. This event was from June 26-28 at Bothell UMC.

We discussed issues pertaining to the church regarding regionalization, climate, and administrative matters. We also had a great time with a Ministry Fair, singing performances, and reconnecting with friends from the past and making new friends as well.

If you would like to learn more, visit pnwumc.org. Or, check out their FB page. A richer report from Blaine Memorial’s team will be provided soon – check out our website soon!

What does the coming of summer mean for you? What new epiphanies do you anticipate with this seasonal change?

A Time to Transition, It’s a New Season

By Anne Arakaki-Lock

I love summer. It’s a time of sunshine, warmth, lots of fresh fruits and flowers, shorts and tee shirts, Popsicles and baseball. In the Pacific Northwest you can sense Seafair in the air, signifying cultural festivals, friends, and food. It’s a fun time. Summer cries out for rest and recreation. It has been a busy winter season at Church. I propose we all take advantage of the new season. We have all worked hard these past few months in so many ways.

“What do people really get for all their hard work? I have seen the burden God has placed on us all. Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time… And people should eat and drink and enjoy the fruits of their labor, for these are gifts from God.” Ecclesiastes 3:9-13.

No doubt we have seasons in our lives. We embrace each and know that God is with us all the time.

“Now learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branches bud and its leaves begin to sprout, you know that summer is near.”Matthew 24:32 NLT.

Scriptures reassure that it would be a good thing for us to look forward to summer. Let us look forward to the second coming of Christ…to New Life.
