Sermon Questions

  • What aspects of motherhood uniquely reflect God’s love and care for us?
  • How can we practically honor our mothers and the women in our lives who have nurtured us?
  • In what ways can we learn from the wisdom and experiences of mothers, both those we know personally and those we read about in scripture?
  • How does it mean to “follow” Jesus in our daily lives, and how can we discern Christ’s will for us?
  • How does this passage encourage us to trust in God’s love and care, even when we face challenges and uncertainties?

Mother’s Day Breakfast • Today

Join us as we honor the women and those who identify as women at Blaine Memorial UMC on Sunday, May 11 from 8:30am-9:45am and then again, after worship. During this time, we will honor, remember, and show our love to our mothers, grandmothers, godmothers, aunts, sisters, cousins, wives, teachers, mentors, and all the women in our lives that have influenced and shaped us into the people who we are today.

Howard Nakase is looking for help by all men and those who identify as men at Blaine Memorial to prepare the breakfast beginning at 6am. Thank you to Howard Nakase for chairing this year’s Mother’s Day breakfast!

Lost and Found items in the Social Hall

Lost something? If you have misplaced any items while at the church, you can check the Lost and Found area. The Lost and Found is currently located on three tables in the Social Hall. Items of high value (such as iPhones, eye glasses, and car keys) are kept safely in the Church Office.

The Lost and Found items will be left out on the tables in the Social Hall until the end of day on Sunday, May 18, 2025. Afterwards, all unclaimed items will be donated to Goodwill.

If you are looking for a specific item or have any questions, please call the Church Office at (206) 723-1536.

Let’s Recycle Potato Chip Bags!

To continue our church track record of proper recycling and helping the earth one little step at a time, Arlene Naganawa and Dale H. Watanabe have a favor of you. We will begin a trial collecting used chip bags from social hour to recycle with our subscription to Ridwell.

Please put your bags in the box located in the social hall near the kitchen. If you have a subscription too and want to help out, please contact Arlene or Dale – we are looking for at least one more that is on a different pick-up schedule!

Prayer and Coffee • Wednesdays at 9am

Meeting Jesus at the Table: A Lenten Study • Tuesday, April 15 at 7:00pm

Rev. Karen continues to lead a Lent Book Study using “Meeting Jesus at the Table: A Lenten Study”. She will teach the class on Tuesday (4/15), 7:00PM, discussing A Meal of Memories, Matthew 26:17-30 and Easter, Luke 24:13-35.

The classes will be held on Zoom and the link will be released the day before.

This year’s All Church Lenten Book is Meeting Jesus at the Table: A Lenten Study. The book is written by Cynthia M. Campbell and Christine Coy Fohr. For Lent this year, our theme will be Bread of Life: Meeting Jesus at the Table.

The Gospels are full of stories of Jesus sharing meals with people. Whether multiplying bread to feed a whole crowd, relaxing with his inner circle, or telling curious elites’ stories about even greater banquets, Jesus imparts wisdom and forgiveness during mealtimes.

This book study provides biblical insights along with thought-provoking queries regarding our own time, such as whom should we invite to Sunday dinner and who is left out and left behind in our culture today. Each chapter includes questions for small group discussion or personal reflection.

Books are on sale in the Church Office for $10.00 each.

Reconciling Ministries Network Devotional, Written by Lynne Onishi

Blaine Memorial UMC Member, Former BYG Director, and CST Seminarian Lynne Onishi has written a Lenten devotional, and it is available as a digital download for $10. You can read a little more about the RMN Lenten Devotional here: Into the Wilderness: a Reconciling Lenten Devotional – Reconciling Ministries Network.

Good Friday • April 18

This year’s Good Friday Service will be a new collaboration with Beacon UMC. Blaine Memorial UMC is hosting our first Good Friday collaborative worship service with Beacon UMC at 7:00PM. We will begin our evening together with a simple soup supper meal at 5:45PM, followed with worship at 7:00PM. Join us as we remember Jesus’ seven last words and actions before being crucified. We’ll remember Jesus’ love for us. We’ll hear from different members of Blaine Memorial UMC and Beacon UMC.

We invite all who are attending Easter Sunday worship (in person) to bring flowers from your garden (trimmed to a short stem). These flowers will be placed on the cross as you enter the Sanctuary for Easter worship.

Easter Egg Hunt: The Church School invites children to participate in an Easter Egg Hunt in the Courtyard (weather permitting). Please remind children to bring their own baskets, and feel free to invite your grandchildren, friends, and neighbors to join us for the hunt!

All are Welcome!

  • How do you feel about being interrupted while speaking or in the middle of a task or meal? What distinguishes a good interruption from a bad one?
  • Why was the behavior of this woman with the alabaster jar so scandalous? What would be a comparably scandalous interruption today?
  • How might you prepare yourself to look for the opportunity in the next interruption you experience?

Sermon Questions

  • Reflect on how many of our church members endured the incarceration in the wilderness. They continued to be faithful to God. How would you navigate and continue to keep your faith?
  • Why is it important for a community and society at large, to remember past errors? What are some ways we remember/commemorate incarceration?
  • With an awareness of the history and lessons of the Japanese American incarceration, what can we do to ensure that such an injustice is not repeated, for any group of people?

Day of Remembrance Film Screening at Blaine Memorial UMC • February 19, 2025

Blaine Memorial UMC is partnering with the Seattle JACL and Puyallup Valley JACL to show the film, Removed by Force: The Eviction of Hawaii’s Japanese Americans During World II at 6:00pm in the Sanctuary. The film sheds light on the relatively unknown experiences of the 1,500 Americans of Japanese ancestry from 23 geographic areas in Hawai‘i who were evicted, but not interned, during World War II.

Tsuru for Solidarity Press Conference • February 19, 2025

Did you know that before February 19, 1941, at least two-thirds of the produce vendors at Pike Place Market were Japanese American? With Executive Order 9066, all were gone by April. This February 19 at 10am, Tsuru will be holding a press conference at the Market to call attention to the fact that the Trump Administration is now threatening immigrants working at the Market today, with incarceration and deportation. We say “Stop Repeating History!”

At the press conference, Tsuru members will re-enact our 1941 forced removal by walking the Market in wearing period dress, and carrying old suitcases (just what they could carry). We will use our actions and words to stand up for immigrants and their families. We need your help.

Do you have clothing (men or women’s coats, suits, hats and especially suitcases we can borrow? We promise to take good care of these precious belongings as we protest. If you have any of these things, and/or would like to walk with us, please contact Margie Sekijima. Thank you Blaine Community for your ongoing support.
