Meeting Jesus at the Table: A Lenten Study • Tuesday, April 15 at 7:00pm

Rev. Karen continues to lead a Lent Book Study using “Meeting Jesus at the Table: A Lenten Study”. She will teach the class on Tuesday (4/15), 7:00PM, discussing A Meal of Memories, Matthew 26:17-30 and Easter, Luke 24:13-35.

The classes will be held on Zoom and the link will be released the day before.

This year’s All Church Lenten Book is Meeting Jesus at the Table: A Lenten Study. The book is written by Cynthia M. Campbell and Christine Coy Fohr. For Lent this year, our theme will be Bread of Life: Meeting Jesus at the Table.

The Gospels are full of stories of Jesus sharing meals with people. Whether multiplying bread to feed a whole crowd, relaxing with his inner circle, or telling curious elites’ stories about even greater banquets, Jesus imparts wisdom and forgiveness during mealtimes.

This book study provides biblical insights along with thought-provoking queries regarding our own time, such as whom should we invite to Sunday dinner and who is left out and left behind in our culture today. Each chapter includes questions for small group discussion or personal reflection.

Books are on sale in the Church Office for $10.00 each.

Reconciling Ministries Network Devotional, Written by Lynne Onishi

Feel free to bring a cup of coffee, tea, and a bite to eat. Hope to see you on Wednesday.

We will begin our evening together with a simple soup supper meal at 5:45PM, followed with worship at 7:00PM. Join us as we remember Jesus’ seven last words and actions before being crucified. We’ll remember Jesus’ love for us. We’ll hear from different members of Blaine Memorial UMC and Beacon UMC.

Celebrate the Risen Christ, Easter Sunday • April 20

Easter Breakfast: Join us for Easter Breakfast in the LAC at 8:30AM as the Blaine Youth Group (BYG) will prepare, cook, and serve the breakfast. There will be two opportunities to eat: 8:30AM and after worship!

We invite all who are attending Easter Sunday worship (in person) to bring flowers from your garden (trimmed to a short stem). These flowers will be placed on the cross as you enter the Sanctuary for Easter worship.

Easter Egg Hunt: The Church School invites children to participate in an Easter Egg Hunt in the Courtyard (weather permitting). Please remind children to bring their own baskets, and feel free to invite your grandchildren, friends, and neighbors to join us for the hunt!

All are Welcome!

  • How do you feel about being interrupted while speaking or in the middle of a task or meal? What distinguishes a good interruption from a bad one?
  • Why was the behavior of this woman with the alabaster jar so scandalous? What would be a comparably scandalous interruption today?

Sermon Questions

  • Reflect on how many of our church members endured the incarceration in the wilderness. They continued to be faithful to God. How would you navigate and continue to keep your faith?

  • With an awareness of the history and lessons of the Japanese American incarceration, what can we do to ensure that such an injustice is not repeated, for any group of people?

Day of Remembrance Film Screening at Blaine Memorial UMC • February 19, 2025

Blaine Memorial UMC is partnering with the Seattle JACL and Puyallup Valley JACL to show the film, Removed by Force: The Eviction of Hawaii’s Japanese Americans During World II at 6:00pm in the Sanctuary. The film sheds light on the relatively unknown experiences of the 1,500 Americans of Japanese ancestry from 23 geographic areas in Hawai‘i who were evicted, but not interned, during World War II.

Tsuru for Solidarity Press Conference • February 19, 2025

Did you know that before February 19, 1941, at least two-thirds of the produce vendors at Pike Place Market were Japanese American? With Executive Order 9066, all were gone by April. This February 19 at 10am, Tsuru will be holding a press conference at the Market to call attention to the fact that the Trump Administration is now threatening immigrants working at the Market today, with incarceration and deportation. We say “Stop Repeating History!”

At the press conference, Tsuru members will re-enact our 1941 forced removal by walking the Market in wearing period dress, and carrying old suitcases (just what they could carry). We will use our actions and words to stand up for immigrants and their families. We need your help.

Do you have clothing (men or women’s coats, suits, hats and especially suitcases we can borrow? We promise to take good care of these precious belongings as we protest. If you have any of these things, and/or would like to walk with us, please contact Margie Sekijima. Thank you Blaine Community for your ongoing support.

Sermon Questions

  • How did God speak to you through the scripture/sermon this week?
  • What details from this story stand out to you? (Where is he, how much wine does he create, what does his mom ask of him, how does the master of the feast respond?)
  • How does Jesus respond to his mom’s request? What does this show us about his mission?
  • What are some reasons Jesus begins his ministry with turning water into wine?
  • How do the seven signs help bolster our understanding of who Jesus is so that we may have eternal life?
  • Jesus was socially engaged in celebratory events in the lives of others. What does this tell us about how we should engage in the mission of God?
