Dear Blaine – Your delegates, fellow church members, and Senior Pastor AND our new Associate Pastor have returned from this year’s Pacific Northwest Annual Conference Sessions in Bothell, Washington. This event was from June 26-28 at Bothell UMC.
We discussed issues pertaining to the church regarding regionalization, climate, and administrative matters. We also had a great time with a Ministry Fair, singing performances, and reconnecting with friends from the past and making new friends as well.

Join us for prayer and community on Wednesdays at 9:00AM on Zoom. Our time together consists of brief check-ins, devotionals, and prayers. Thank you, everyone, for bringing in sweet and savory treats for our fellowship time on Sundays. We all enjoy them and are now running low. Please consider bringing in some of your favorite individually wrapped chips to share. Examples are potato chips, Doritos, Cheetos, etc. We appreciate your generosity.
You may drop the treats off in the social hall kitchen area on Sundays or during church office hours.

As we continue to celebrate the 120th anniversary of Blaine Memorial UMC, we reflect on our church community and the world at large. We have suffered many challenges so early in the year and pray for peace and harmony going forward. To this end, the first of our annual fundraising events, Sukiyaki 2025, was a resounding success with our meal numbers up and our contribution to the California Wildfire Disaster Response through United Methodist Committee on Relief totaling more than $20,000.

The Sukiyaki Committee appreciates all the support of the congregation, their families and friends to help make Sukiyaki such a success. With over 150 souls working pre-, during, and post-Sukiyaki Dinner, making all the working parts move in sync (including many behind-the-scenes individuals) guests were treated to an efficient and flawless dinner service. It is a blessing to be able to serve our church and surrounding communities with many selfless members who do so with grace and gratitude.

2025 Educational Scholarships • Application period open through May 15, 2025
The Blaine Memorial United Methodist Church Educational Scholarships are designed to support the mission of the church through supporting a multitude of educational opportunities. We are proud to have helped students in their pursuit of continuing education since 1968. We encourage all applicants; from those just entering their next phase of education to those returning to complete or pursue continued education.
We are blessed to offer the following scholarships:

Friends and family of Blaine Memorial United Methodist celebrated faithfully the Church’s 120th and 121st Anniversary! The congregation welcomed back former clergy who served Blaine Memorial for years, including Bishop Robert T. Hoshibata, the Revs David Nieda, Alann Hamada, Ken Miyake, Shalom Agtarap, and Dione Corsilles. We also welcomed honored guest, Bishop Cedrick Bridgeforth of The Greater Northwest Conference.

Following our Anniversary Worship Service, we enjoyed a grand Church Potluck provided by our congregation. We recognized our church members age 88+ and enjoyed musical performances from the Blaine Ukulele Group of Seattle (B.U.G.S.), the Blaine Memorial UMC Choir, and individual performances from our members.

Ash Wednesday Service • Wednesday, March 5, 7pm
Next Wednesday, March 5, is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the penitential season of Lent. Ashes will be distributed at 12:00PM and at 7:00PM during an Ash Wednesday service in the Sanctuary. As we begin another Lenten journey, we are invited to reflect on Jesus’ temptations in the wilderness. Lent is a season of remembering our true selves through reflection, reconciliation, and reconnection on the journey toward the cross and the empty tomb.
Meeting Jesus at the Table: A Lenten Study • See Dates and Times (Below)
This year’s all church Lenten Study book is Meeting Jesus at the Table: A Lenten Study. The book is written by Cynthia M. Campbell and Christine Coy Fohr. For Lent this year, our theme will be Bread of Life: Meeting Jesus at the Table. The Gospels are full of stories of Jesus sharing meals with people. Whether multiplying bread to feed a whole crowd, relaxing with his inner circle, or telling curious elites stories about even greater banquets, Jesus imparts wisdom and forgiveness during meal times. This eight-session study provides biblical insights along with thought-provoking queries regarding our own time, such as whom should we invite to Sunday dinner and who is left out and left behind in our culture today. Each chapter includes questions for small group discussion or personal reflection.
Books are on sale in the Church Office for $10.00 each.
Rev. Karen will lead a 7-week Lent Book Study using Meeting Jesus at the Table: A Lenten Study. She will teach the class on the following days:

Kimball Elementary School Cloud Pavilion Art Dedication • Thursday, March 13, 5:30pm
Kimball Elementary School Principal Angela Bogan has invited the Blaine Memorial congregation to Artist Erin Shigaki’s Cloud Pavilion Art Installation in the Kimball Elementary School Library on March 13, from 5:30PM-6:30PM. The Cloud Pavilion (kumo no akusha) by Erin Shigaki conveys the histories, hopes, and relationships of both Kimball Elementary students and Beacon Hill residents. Please RSVP to Yuki Sofronas by Wednesday, March 12 at 4:00PM so we can get a head count. The church is arranging rides to the school entrance. For those who feel comfortable walking to the school, we will walk together in a group.
About Erin Shigaki
Erin Shigaki’s art practice focuses on the experiences of communities of color, often the World War II (1939-45) incarceration of her Japanese-American community. She is passionate about highlighting similarities between that history, the detention and family separation immigrants face today, and other systemic violence and injustices that people of color continue to face. She believes that using art to tell stories about these moments can educate, redress wrongs, and heal. Erin Shigaki was born and raised in Seattle, Washington. She is a graphic designer and illustrator by trade. She is also a community activist. She helps run an annual pilgrimage to Minidoka, the American WWII concentration camp where her family was incarcerated, and she is also a part of Tsuru for Solidarity, working to end detention and incarceration for all. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University.

Congregational Photo • Immediately after worship in the Sanctuary
Immediately after worship, we’ll gather to take a congregational photo in the Sanctuary. This photo will include all of our dignitaries. Since we will be taking a group photo, we are canceling the Zoom Break Out Room. It will provide the opportunity for our facilitators to participate in the congregational photo. Blaine Memorial’s 120th Anniversary Sunday Celebration and Potluck Information
Blaine Memorial UMC will have a 120th anniversary Sunday service with special guests and dignitaries from our past to celebrate and reflect on its 120-year history and look forward to its further growth and development into the next 120 years of service in love. After the service there will be a potluck gathering and program with exhibits, entertainment, reunions with friends and family, and an honoring of church members who are 88+ years old by the end of January. Please join us for the culminating celebration of our 120th anniversary and start of our 121st year! We look forward to celebrating with all our members new and old and our many community friends to remember and renew our connections into the future. Please bring a potluck dish to share. All are welcome.
For the potluck we are asking folks to contribute some dishes to share with others. (If you are single, please feel free to bring just one of the items. If you are 88+ years old, you do not need to bring a dish. This celebration is for you!).
We hope you can join us for this special culmination celebration of our church’s 120th Anniversary.

There’s a new book study sponsored by the National Japanese American United Methodist Caucus that will begin next Tuesday (1/21). Rev. Brian Lee (Simpson UMC in Arvada, CO) and Rev. John Miyahara (UMC Navy Chaplain in San Diego, CA) will facilitate “Secret Harvests: A Hidden Story of Separation and the Resilience of a Family Farm” by David Mas Masumoto. Day of Remembrance Film Screening at Blaine Memorial UMC • February 19, 2025
Blaine Memorial UMC is partnering with the Seattle JACL and Puyallup Valley JACL to show the film, Removed by Force: The Eviction of Hawai?i’s Japanese Americans During World II at 6:00PM in the Sanctuary. The film sheds light on the relatively unknown experiences of the 1,500 Americans of Japanese ancestry from 23 geographic areas in Hawai‘i who were evicted, but not interned, during World War II.

A Celebration of Life Service for Sumi Yoshioka • Today at 1pm
You’re invited to the public Celebration of Life Service for Sumiko “Sumi” Yoshioka for this Sunday, January 19, 2025 at 1:00 PM. There will be a reception to follow in the Lee Activity Center. A lifelong church member, she faithfully served as organist, pianist, choir and handbell choir director. She was known for her kindness, grace, and was an island girl at heart. For the potluck we are asking folks to contribute some dishes to share with others. (If you are single, please feel free to bring just one of the items. If you are 88+ years old, you do not need to bring a dish. This celebration is for you!). Potluck assignment recommendations are listed below by last name:

NJAUMC Book Study During Epiphanytide
There’s a new book study sponsored by the National Japanese American United Methodist Caucus that will begin next Tuesday (1/21). Rev. Brian Lee (Simpson UMC in Arvada, CO) and Rev. John Miyahara (UMC Navy Chaplain in San Diego, CA) will facilitate “Secret Harvests: A Hidden Story of Separation and the Resilience of a Family Farm” by David Mas Masumoto. We will gather virtually on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM. (PST). Below is our reading schedule:

Blaine Memorial UMC’s Annual Sukiyaki will be on Saturday, March 1, 2025. Currently, the Sukiyaki Committee is seeking nominations for a beneficiary for the upcoming Sukiyaki event. Please submit a brief description of your recommended beneficiary recipient to the Church Office by Wednesday, January 22, 2025 (for review and approval by Ad Board). Several members of the Blaine Memorial UMC Community, including its Blaine Youth Group (BYG), share what makes this lay-led ministry vital to the families in the neighborhood.
120th and 121st Anniversary Sunday Service and Potluck
On January 26, 2025, Blaine Memorial UMC will have a 120th anniversary Sunday service with special guests from our past to celebrate and reflect on its 120-year history and look forward to its further growth and development into the next 120 years of service in love.
