Haiku and Senryu poems highlight community’s meaning of Christmas and more!
By Shig Nishida, photos by Yuki Sofronas
The first Blaine Memorial haiku/senryu contest was a resounding success. There were 36 entries and they were all winners. Since there were only six prizes, a jury of their peers had the difficult task of picking six “winners”. Congratulations to Kim Akimoto, Neal Komedal, Barbara Nagaoka, Gail Nomura, Lesley Okura, and Mike Takahashi.
Each winner received a gift card that is worth $25. One was for a gourmet ice cream and the rest is for Starbucks.
Congratulations to the winners and be sure to enter another poem for the next contest!

‘Tis the Season and the Place: Calling for Haiku and Senryu • Deadline: December 22
This year the special Advent and Christmas “ornament” for Blaine MUMC is a haiku contest dreamed up by Shig Nishida. Not just haiku, but also senryu.
Haiku is a 17-syllable poem, conventional in Japanese, in three lines of 5-7-5 syllables. Senryu, like Haiku, are 17-syllable poems about insights into society, people, rather than about perceptions of nature. Senryu are social commentary or criticism, or personal self-reflections. The poem should imply or suggest the season it occurs in, should be focused on the immediate setting or place where the poem occurs, and should try to show a spontaneous insight.
Submit your entry on a 5×7 index card (available in the entrance of the Sanctuary and in the church office) with bold and large font or handwriting in drop boxes or the office by the deadline of December 22. A panel of judges will select poems in each category submitted in Advent and the poets and their poems will be announced in church. This contest is open to members of all ages, and you may submit multiple entries with prizes awarded to winners.

Sermon Questions
1. What saint in your life has had the greatest influence on your faith?
2. It is common to think about “saints” as holier-than-thou and as the rare few. By virtue of our baptism, we are all called toward being saints. Do you think of yourself as called to be a saint? Why or why not? What difference would it make if you thought of yourself as a saint?
3. What does it mean to be surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses?

Sermon Reflection Questions
Consider the question that the expert in the law asked Jesus: “Who is my neighbor?”
How does this parable redefine the concept of a neighbor?
Who in your life might be considered an unexpected neighbor, and how can you extend love, compassion, and care to them?
Reflect on a time when you received help or kindness from an unexpected source. How did it affect your perspective on compassion and generosity?
In what ways can you practically apply the lessons from the Good Samaritan parable in your communities, workplaces, and families to create a positive impact that we could help our neighbors to be a better location of their well-being?
