Meeting Jesus at the Table: A Lenten Study • See Dates and Times (Below)

Rev. Karen continues to lead a Lent Book Study using “Meeting Jesus at the Table: A Lenten Study”. She will teach the class on the following days:

  • Tuesday (4/8), 7:00PM, Hospitality and Discipleship, John 12:1-8
  • Tuesday (4/15), 7:00PM, A Meal of Memories, Matthew 26:17-30 and Easter, Luke 24:13-35

The classes will be held on Zoom and the link will be released the day before.

This year’s All Church Lenten Book is Meeting Jesus at the Table: A Lenten Study. The book is written by Cynthia M. Campbell and Christine Coy Fohr. For Lent this year, our theme will be Bread of Life: Meeting Jesus at the Table.

The Gospels are full of stories of Jesus sharing meals with people. Whether multiplying bread to feed a whole crowd, relaxing with his inner circle, or telling curious elites’ stories about even greater banquets, Jesus imparts wisdom and forgiveness during mealtimes.

This book study provides biblical insights along with thought-provoking queries regarding our own time, such as whom should we invite to Sunday dinner and who is left out and left behind in our culture today. Each chapter includes questions for small group discussion or personal reflection.

Books are on sale in the Church Office for $10.00 each.

Reconciling Ministries Network Devotional, Written by Lynne Onishi

Blaine Memorial UMC Member, Former BYG Director, and CST Seminarian Lynne Onishi has written a Lenten devotional, and it is available as a digital download for $10. You can read a little more about the RMN Lenten Devotional here: Into the Wilderness: a Reconciling Lenten Devotional – Reconciling Ministries Network.

Prayer and Coffee • Wednesdays at 9am

Join Rev. Karen for prayer and community on Wednesdays at 9:00AM on Zoom. Our time together consists of brief check-ins, devotionals, and prayers. This is a great way to continue with Lent, clear and center your mind, all while connecting with God and your prayer community. We will discuss the significance of Lent. Feel free to bring a cup of coffee, tea, and a bite to eat. Hope to see you on Wednesday.

Good Friday • April 18

This year’s Good Friday Service will be a new collaboration with Beacon UMC. Blaine Memorial UMC is hosting our first Good Friday collaborative worship service with Beacon UMC at 7:00PM. We will begin our evening together with a simple soup supper meal at 5:45PM, followed with worship at 7:00PM. Join us as we remember Jesus’ seven last words and actions before being crucified. We’ll remember Jesus’ love for us. We’ll hear from different members of Blaine Memorial UMC and Beacon UMC.

Celebrate the Risen Christ, Easter Sunday • April 20

Easter Breakfast: Join us for Easter Breakfast in the LAC at 8:30AM as the Blaine Youth Group (BYG) will prepare, cook, and serve the breakfast. There will be two opportunities to eat: 8:30AM and after worship!

Flowering of the Cross: One of the most meaningful traditions that we celebrate on Easter Sunday is the Flowering of the Cross. It symbolizes new life in Christ. We invite all who are attending Easter Sunday worship (in person) to bring flowers from your garden (trimmed to a short stem). These flowers will be placed on the cross as you enter the Sanctuary for Easter worship.

Easter Egg Hunt: The Church School invites children to participate in an Easter Egg Hunt in the Courtyard (weather permitting). Please remind children to bring their own baskets, and feel free to invite your grandchildren, friends, and neighbors to join us for the hunt!

All are Welcome!

Sermon Questions

  • Are you a recipe follower or an experimenter? What about your preferred method appeals to you?
  • When has someone been extraordinarily generous with you?
  • Are there times when you choose “sacrifice” over “mercy” when it comes to practicing radical hospitality Jesus models for us and to which God calls us?
  • What groups today tend to be viewed the way “tax collectors and sinners” were in Jesus’ day? Have you ever been shamed for who you eat with or keep company with?

Pastor Appreciation Lunch • Today after Worship

Did you know that October is Pastor Appreciation Month? Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) is hosting a Pastor Appreciation Lunch next Sunday, October 20, immediately after worship in the Social Hall. Join us for a delicious meal and celebrate Revs. Karen, Jeney, Mark, and Cruz!

This celebration was established in 1992 with a mission of uplifting and encouraging pastors, missionaries and religious workers. Let’s celebrate our pastors and lift them up for their hard work, ministry, and dedication to Blaine Memorial UMC.

Reflections on 120 Years of Grace Discussion: “Into the Future”Today, 11:45a-12:45p

The Archives Committee concludes the discussion series on the 120-year history and future of Blaine Memorial UMC, titled “Reflections on 120 Years of Grace.”  The discussion sessions will be held from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. after Sunday service in the Social Hall on October 13 and 20, 2024.  Light refreshments will be served.

Today’s final session, titled “Into the Future,” will reflect on what we have learned and discuss our visions for the future development of the church.  Materials will be presented from the archives as well as church members knowledgeable about each period will speak of their experiences.

There will be ample time for participants to ask questions and share their own thoughts. Please join us in learning more about our church’s history and begin discussions on our visions for the next 120 years.

Creative Competition • Submissions due October 27

In conjunction with this discussion series, the Archives Committee is organizing another “competition” organized by Shig Nishida.  We are asking members to submit their reflections on the history and future of Blaine Memorial UMC.  This can take the form of submitting a few sentences, a paragraph, a short essay, short graphic novel/cartoon/anime, short play, a prayer, poems, music/song (new composition or lyrics sung to the tune of a known song), artwork, video, dance, etc.  Let us read/hear/see/feel your thoughts on the 120 years of Grace and the next 120 years of Grace for Blaine Memorial UMC.  Submit your entries to the Blaine Memorial UMC office by October 27, 2024 (sooner than later is preferred).

The Archives Committee continually seeks relevant church documents, photographs, and other materials and memorabilia to add to our archival records and illuminate previously unknown parts of our church’s history. Please let the committee know if you have any materials to donate or materials for the committee to scan and add to the archives. Monetary donations in support of the work of the archives are also appreciated.

Costumes are encouraged! We love to see everyone dressed up, even the adults!

Once again, please be sensitive in regards to costumes that are too scary or gory. We also ask that your costume not have a mask that covers your entire face of that your face is painted in a way that makes you unrecognizable. For safety reasons, all adults should be able to recognize the faces of the other adults.

Would you like to participate and/or decorate your trunk? Please contact Jennifer Lew.

Reflections on 120 Years of Grace Discussion Sessions • 9/22, 10/13, 10/20

The Archives Committee is sponsoring a four-part discussion series on the 120-year history and future of Blaine Memorial UMC, titled “Reflections on 120 Years of Grace.”  The discussion sessions will be held from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. after Sunday service in the Social Hall on September 15 and 22 and October 13 and 20, 2024.  Light refreshments will be served.

Today’s session, titled “Strong in Hope,” will discuss the incarcerated church in WW II and the postwar rebuilding of the church to 1964.  The third session, titled “Serve in Love,” will center on the years 1965 to 2024 and the fourth, titled “Into the Future,” will reflect on what we have learned and discuss our visions for the future development of the church.  Materials will be presented from the archives as well as church members knowledgeable about each period will speak of their experiences.

There will be ample time for participants to ask questions and share their own thoughts. Please join us in learning more about our church’s history and begin discussions on our visions for the next 120 years.

Innovation Hub Update

Posted by on Aug 12, 2024 in Blaine Youth Group, Church News & Events, Innovation Hub, Service Opportunities, Small Groups, Spiritual Formation

During February 2023, Lynne Onishi and Blaine Memorial participated in part II of the Day of Remembrance at the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma, WA to protest worsening conditions inside NWDC.

Lynne to attend Claremont Seminary!

By Lynne Onishi, photos by Ryan Kozu, Kai Yamamoto, et. al.

Outgoing Blaine Youth Group Director and Innovation Hub Convener, Lynne Onishi, shares some memories and thank-yous for those she has served during her years of leadership at Blaine Memorial UMC. Thank you, Lynne for being a vibrant part of Blaine Memorial’s church history! Blessings to you as you embark on new adventures!

At the end of the summer, I’ll be moving to Los Angeles to begin a three-year Master of Divinity program at the Claremont School of Theology. It will be a big change in my life, and I ask for your continued prayers. I couldn’t take this next step without the care and support of my community at home!

Lynne Onishi supports Seattle First UMC during last year’s Pride Weekend.

This has not been an easy decision to make. I’ve been discerning this call to ministry for many years now and I feel like it’s finally time for me to take this next step forward. I’m excited for seminary and for all the new changes ahead, but this is truly a bittersweet moment for me. It’s hard to say goodbye to everything and everyone I’ve known.

It’s been seven years since I first began directing the youth ministry at Blaine Memorial in the fall of 2017. What I thought was just going to be a one-year college gig turned into a formative experience leading ministry. It has changed the trajectory of my life! Throughout this time, I have had the privilege of watching several young people grow up and become more fully themselves! We led ministry virtually for over a year! And in 2021, I embarked on a new project here leading the Blaine Innovation Hub and starting new ministries with young adults. My role has expanded to include leadership and ministry support in several areas since. I’ve been lucky to see the Spirit moving in so many ways!

Lynne Onishi and Blaine’s young adults hiked up to Lake 22 near Granite Falls, September 2023. Onishi served as a leader for both youth and young adults!

I wanted to take a moment to express some big thank-yous to this Blaine Memorial community who has walked alongside me. I want to extend my gratitude to the Innovation Hub team who has continually dreamed of new ideas and ways to engage young adults. I want to thank the reconciling team who has put so much thought and care into becoming a reconciling church. I will forever be grateful to the Blaine Youth Group leaders who show up each week and bring the energy with them. I want to thank the Blaine Memorial pastoral leadership past and present for your guidance in all things ministry, grad school, leadership, spiritual formation and life! I want to thank all the youth and their families who have been so supportive and receptive over the years.

The Innovation Hub held Zoom Bible Studies that covered various topics such as justice and inclusion. Lynne Onishi helped convened events that brought issues of LGBTQI+ inclusion to the forefront of Blaine Memorial’s ministry.

And I’d like to make a few shout-outs to the individuals who have been in the depths of this work with me over the years – my co-directors and co-conveners. You’ve made this work meaningful and transformative not only for the congregation but for me.

Firstly, I want to thank Kai Yamamoto and Kaylee Yokoyama for the ways you’ve stepped up to lead BYG alongside me for the last year and a half. You’ve put so much time and care into ministry with our leaders, youth, and families. It has been an honor to see you both grow into the leaders you are today!

Next, I need to make a big shoutout to Lawrence Paltep, who co-directed the youth ministry with me for over four years, including those uncertain and chaotic pandemic years! We accomplished so much thanks to your passion, creativity, and desire to try wild and wacky things!

Lastly, I want to thank Yoshi Kuramoto, who began this journey with me as my BYG co-director all the way back in 2017 and went on to lead the Innovation Hub and young adult ministry! I’m so proud of the work we’ve done together, and I am forever grateful for your encouragement to keep asking the questions and responding faithfully.

In 2023, the Innovation Hub hosted a family movie night in September! IH events like this provided opportunities for people of all ages to gather and enjoy meaningful, inspirational fellowship with friends of all ages.

As I transition to new places and new experiences, I hope the Blaine Memorial community will continue trying new ways to do ministry and dream about new possibilities for what this church can look like. I hope you may embrace the neighborhood and wider community that you’re part of. And may you continue to listen for God’s calling in all of this!

Lynne Onishi is the outgoing Youth Director for BYG, Innovation Hub Convener for Blaine Memorial UMC. Thank you for your service, Lynne and blessing on your journey at Claremont School of Theology!

2024 Guatemala Mission Trip

From August 16 through August 24, a Blaine mission team (20 from Blaine Memorial and 3 from Mt. Vernon First UMC) will be going on a trip to Guatemala in Central America. We will be working mostly with the indigenous Mayan people near the town of Panajachel by Lake Atitlan with a UMC related organization, Mission Guatemala (www.missionguatemala.com). Mission Guatemala is “a faith-based 501(c)3 non-profit organization with a mission to help meet the basic needs and improve the quality of life of under-served and impoverished Guatemalan peoples through health, education and nutrition initiatives and missionary service”. We will have a Vacation Bible School with crafts, games, lots of laughter and fun.

Our construction crew will help build a kitchen at the junior high school in Godinez. Our dental team will be serving Mission Guatemala’s scholarship children at the medical clinic in San Andres, Semetabaj. Most of all, we will be building friendships with the missionaries and staff at Mission Guatemala, with the local families living in the area, and with our team members. We are excited about the opportunity to share and receive God’s love with people of a different culture.

We ask Blaine church members to please pray for safe travels, building relationships with those we meet and showing Christ’s love through our actions and words. Thank you for your prayers and support!
