Fourth Sunday After the Epiphany

Posted by on Jan 31, 2026 in Blaine Youth Group, Church News & Events, Giving, Prayer, Sermons, Service Opportunities, Small Groups, Spiritual Formation, Sunday Worship, Weekly Calendar

All are Welcome!

Sermon Questions

  • Jesus says, “Blessed are those who mourn.” What does mourning look like in today’s world? Where do you see people grieving — personally or publicly?
  • How do you usually respond to painful or disturbing news: scrolling past it, arguing about it, or sitting with it?
  • The sermon talked about grace not just forgiving us, but shaping us. Where do you sense God might be trying to soften or reshape your heart right now?
  • What would it look like for grace to change how you talk about difficult topics —not just what you believe?
  • What is one small, concrete way you could practice justice, kindness, or humility this week?
  • How can this community help you live out your faith when the world feels overwhelming or broken?

Sermon Questions

  • How has God been faithful in your own life, and in the life of this church, over the years? In what ways can we honor that faithfulness today?
  • Blaine Memorial UMC has a history of “showing up” for others, even when it was difficult. How is God calling you to stand with the vulnerable, speak for justice, or serve your community in this present moment?
  • Our church is not a museum but a living body of Christ. How can we ensure that Blaine Memorial continues to be a place where God’s love is not just remembered, but actively lived for future generations?

Sermon Questions

  • The sermon compares justice to water slowly breaking through concrete. Where have you seen small, persistent actions make a difference — in your life or in the world?
  • In Amos 5, God rejects worship that is disconnected from justice. What might that warning look like for the church today?
  • The sermon says that fear is often used to justify injustice. Where do you see fear shaping decisions or attitudes in our society — or in yourself?
  • How does remembering past injustices, like Japanese American incarceration, help us respond more faithfully to injustices happening now?
  • Dr. King spoke of hope that is disciplined, not naïve. What helps you hold on to hope when you feel tired, overwhelmed, or discouraged?
  • The sermon reminds us we don’t have to fix everything — but we can’t surrender to despair. What is one small, faithful step you feel called to take?
  • The closing question asks: Will we stand in the way of the stream, or step into it? What might stepping into the stream of justice look like for you this week?

All are Welcome!

Sermon Questions

  • Seeing the Light – Where do you sense God’s light breaking through in your life or in our community right now – and what might be keeping your eyes closed to it?
  • Receiving the Truth with Humility – Once we see the light, God often invites us to change. What truth might the Spirit be gently teaching you to receive, especially in how you love God, your neighbor, or even your enemy?
  • Becoming the Light for Others – How might our church’s everyday acts of care – sharing food, offering welcome, showing compassion – become clearer signs of Christ’s light and hope for our neighborhood, not just for us but for the world God loves?
