Position Overview
The Youth Director at Blaine Memorial United Methodist Church is a dedicated individual with a heart for youth ministry, committed to guiding and mentoring young individuals in their faith journey. This position involves direct engagement with 6th to 12th graders, creating a supportive and encouraging environment. We are seeking an energetic leader who will inspire youth, create community, plan and execute programs to build relationships within the youth group, among families, and with the greater community. The Youth Director will work under the supervision of Blaine Memorial United Methodist Church Pastor, ensuring alignment with the church’s mission. This position is well-suited for someone looking to advance his/her/their leadership skills in multiple areas, to cultivate gifts in communication, and to be creative within the context of the broader mission of the congregation.
Key Responsibilities
Spiritual Leadership
- Grow and implement a youth ministry program in harmony with the values and mission of the church.
- Create, plan, and facilitate weekly Bible-based lesson plans for Sunday spiritual instruction.
- Lead engaging and age-appropriate discussions for life application, and interactive activities (games, crafts, small group exercises) to nurture the spiritual development of 6th to 12th graders.
Mentorship and Relationship Building
- Build meaningful relationships with youth members, offering guidance and support in their personal and spiritual lives.
- Foster a safe and inclusive space where young individuals feel comfortable sharing their thoughts, concerns, and joys.
- Encourage positive peer relationships and mentorship among youth group members.
- Organize and facilitate regular youth group meetings, events, and retreats.
Collaboration
- Work collaboratively with other church staff and youth group leaders to integrate youth activities into the overall church calendar.
- Collaborate with parents, keeping them informed about youth ministry activities and encouraging their involvement.
- Encourage parents to participate in appropriate ways.
Communication
- Demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Employ excellent interpersonal skills.
- Communicate effectively and regularly with youth through various channels, including social media, emails, texts, and other relevant platforms.
- Keep parents informed about upcoming events, programs, and important information related to the youth ministry through weekly email updates.
- Submit an article for the church newsletter, once every two months.
- Submit an annual report for the church conference.
Outreach and Growth
- Develop strategies to attract new youth members and seamlessly integrate them into the youth ministry.
- Explore creative ways to engage youth in community outreach and service projects.
Planning and Organizing
- Meet with the Senior or Associate Pastor as needed.
- Lead Sunday Blaine Youth Group (BYG) activities, including special occasions involving BYG.
- Plan and facilitate fund raising for youth activities.
- Lead weekly Zoom meetings with BYG Leaders, approximately one hour each.
- Attend BYG Council Meeting led by the Pastor, held once every six months.
- Attend other church event-related meetings as required, including summer youth camps.
Qualifications
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.
- Bachelor of Arts in such fields as teaching or social work or relevant experience in leading youth.
- Proficiency in software applications such as PowerPoint, Word, Excel and other skills necessary for the position.
