Ikebana is the art of Japanese flower arranging.
We believe that art forms of all kinds are a means of expression of our faith through the movements of the Holy Spirit in our lives and in our church community. At Blaine Memorial UMC, a weekly group meets to study the art of Ikenobo Ikebana, the oldest and original form of Japanese flower arranging which began in the 7th Century. Through the study of this art form, students learn the teachings of Senno Ikenobo in order to grow in our faith. Senno Ikenobo taught, “Not only beautiful flowers but also buds and withered flowers have life and each has it’s own beauty. By arranging flowers with reverence, one refines oneself.”
Arranging flowers and finding beauty in nature are practices linked to a heart that both values all of God’s creations and also cares for others in God’s Kingdom.
This class meets most Fridays from noon-2pm. Classes are conducted by Mrs Shigeko Price, certified as a Senior Professor by the Ikenobo Headquarters in Kyoto, Japan. Nominal supply fees apply. Class members’ flower arrangements bring beauty to our worship services and are also displayed at Church events.
