Associate Pastor’s Spiritual Reflection

Treasuring Each Moment at Blaine Memorial

By the Rev. Mia MiKyung Park

My parents practiced Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism before they became Christians. My mother had a particularly deep connection with Buddhism, and one of the most powerful lessons from her Buddhist practices was to consider any encounter as a gift to be treasured. She often said that if we meet once in this lifetime, it means we have met a thousand times in previous lifetimes. Although I don’t agree with the concept of reincarnation, this teaching impressed upon my siblings and me the importance of relationships and being present in every moment.

Additionally, one of the BYG Directors introduced me to a Japanese proverb, ichi-go ichi-e. ‘Ichi-go’ means one’s lifetime, and ‘ichi-e’ means experiencing something just once. Together, they signify treasuring the unrepeatable nature of a moment that is here and now. This proverb resonates deeply with me as I reflect on my time with you.

I cherish this moment as I write my final newsletter article as your associate pastor. I am grateful for each day I spend with you and treasure every moment that I share with you. Every interaction, conversation, and shared prayer is a unique and irreplaceable experience. I appreciate the beauty of our community and the divine connections we share. It has been an honor and delight to serve as your pastor for the past four years, and I will treasure every moment at Blaine Memorial.

The Blaine Youth Group and friends celebrate the class of 2024!

Our Church School’s memorization verse is Isaiah 41:10: ‘Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God; I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.’ This verse is a powerful reminder of God’s unwavering presence and support. I hope and pray that our children memorize this Bible verse and remember God’s guiding hands and the promise of Emmanuel, God with us. It is essential for them to understand that they are never alone and that God’s strength is always surrounding them.

In addition, Church School has decided to hold four Sunday VBS sessions (7/28, 8/4, 8/11, and 8/18) this year, which is a new format of VBS.) This change presents a wonderful opportunity for our children to grow in their faith in a fresh and engaging way. I pray for the growth of our children as Jesus increased in wisdom and in years and in divine and human favor (Luke 2:52). It is my hope that these sessions will be enriching and transformative for them.

The Rev. Mia MiKyung Park celebrates Grad Night with her daughter, Grace.

I am deeply grateful for my ministry with Blaine Memorial over the past four years. This time has been an incredible journey of faith, growth, and fellowship, helping me to grow, stretch, and strengthen my faith and ministry.

As I depart from Blaine Memorial, I will carry with me the lessons learned and the cherished memories from my time here. I also want to remind myself and you that upon leaving Blaine Memorial UMC, I will not be present or participate in worship, events, or church groups, including weddings, baptisms, communions, counseling, visitations, and funerals.

Please know that I am thankful for each of you being a vital part of my journey and for the unwavering support and love you have shown me. I deeply appreciate you all and hold onto the words from Philippians 1:6: “I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.”

May God’s love overflow in you as you become the hands and feet of Jesus Christ, and may the Holy Spirit empower and strengthen you all, now and always. Beloved, be blessed and be a blessing to many others!

The Revs. Mark Hearn, Mia MiKyung Park, Karen Yokota, and Jeney Park-Hearn.

The Rev. Mia MiKyung Park is the outgoing Associate Pastor of Blaine Memorial UMC – now serving Redeemer UMC in Kingston, WA.

BYG Update

On May 26-27, 2024 the Blaine Youth Group “retreated” to Camp Indianola to reflect on our relationship with God.

BYG Update

Retreating from Our Busy-ness

By Kai Yamamoto

The Blaine Youth Group celebrate the Rev. Mia MiKyung Park’s final Sunday as Associate Pastor at Blaine Memorial UMC.

I can’t believe that Rev. Mia MiKyung Park is off to serve at Kingston UMC. It has been an honor and a privilege to work with Rev. Mia, as she is so passionate towards our Blaine Youth Group and is one of the nicest people to be around. As one final project for BYG, Rev. Mia led a series of Confirmation classes which included special guests such as Revs. Jeney Park-Hearn, Mark Hearn, and Cruz Edwin Santos. We also went on a retreat at Camp Indianola in May to “retreat” from our busy lives and take time to slow down and develop our relationships with each other and God.

The retreat was a time of relaxation and reflection. We are constantly busy, going from one thing to the next, and we often do not get a chance to reflect on how amazing our God is. During this retreat, we took time to experience nature, and the beautiful campsite we stayed at. We also took time to reflect on what God has done in our lives, and how God is always with us.

Blaine Memorial’s youth confirmands take a break from activities during a Confirmation Retreat at Camp Indianola.

For one of our confirmation classes, we talked about our relationship with God, and how it is not always perfect. Rev. Mark discussed his relationship with God throughout his life, and how there were times in his life he grew closer to God, but also grew distant from God. But God was always there for him no matter what and he knows God will always walk beside him and care for him. We also took time to reflect on the message and think of times when God was there for us when we didn’t think they were there. I thought about times when things were not going my way and times when I was rejected and felt sad and angry. At the time, I felt like God was not looking after me and I felt my relationship with God was strained. But looking back at it now, I know God was always with me and was doing what was best for me.

Kai Yamamoto serves as the Associate Co-Director of the Blaine Youth Group.

The Blaine Youth Group (BYG) is a place where youth (6th-12th grade) are invited into a loving community and celebrated as they are. BYG provides a safe environment for youth to build lasting friendships, grow spiritually, learn acceptance of self and others, express compassion for the world, and develop a love for God. BYG has a space for any person who is interested and all are welcome.

A group of Blaine young adults and friends gathered in May for a hike at Rattlesnake Ledge by North Bend. The sun was shining and the trail was beautiful! We shared a well-deserved lunch and ice cream together after the hike! Reconciling Ministries Book Study The Reconciling team hosted a book study this past spring. We read and discussed Mihee Kim-Kort’s book “Outside the Lines: How Embracing Queerness Will Transform Your Faith”. We shared many thoughtful conversations and learned so much about faith through a queer lens.

Miriam Tong highlights her artistic talents as well as messy fingers as she and other friends from Blaine Memorial participate in Bob Ross Night!

Senior Pastor Reflection

Marveling at God’s Masterpiece

By The Rev. Karen Yokota Love

I just returned from my month off of rest and time of renewal and it was marvelous. I spent much of my time in nature and marveled at God’s creation: “Whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come.”  2 Corinthians 5:17 God is our master artist.

All of God’s works are originals. Original thoughts, original concepts, original drawings, original scenes of nature which include the ocean, the mountains, and the sky. God’s own creation moves and inspires God to continue painting, creating, sculpting, for us to receive and see. It’s up to us to be good stewards of this Earth and all of God’s resources. May we do just that.

Blaine Memorial class of 2024 grads along with friends and family celebrate together!

Much has happened since my return: we celebrated graduations: Allyson Sofronas, Aidan Lew, Mariko Ronan, and Kai Yamamoto; confirmands: Emma Hearn and Joshua Akiyama; we celebrated the nurturing work of our Church School Teachers, BYG Director, and Associate Directors and Leaders. We said farewell to Rev. Mia MiKyung Park as she’s been appointed to a new faith community at Redeemer UMC in Kingston, WA with a Blaine potluck celebration. I am truly grateful for the blessings and opportunity to work with Rev. Mia and to create some great ministry with her for the past four years! We blessed and celebrated her ministry.

Joshua Santos, Edwin Cruz, Ron Nobuyama, Lawrence Paltep, the Rev. Karen Yokota Love, George Yates and Lynne Onishi all attended this year’s PNW Annual Conference serving in various capacities.

Read more about this year’s Pacific Northwest Annual Conference Sessions.

At this year’s PNW Annual Conference, which was in Richland, WA. Ron Nobuyama, and George Yates served as your Annual Conference delegates. Lynne Onishi, Lawrence Paltep, Edwin Santos and Joshua Santos served as assistants to the PNW Conference Staff. Rev Mia and I were present as your clergy representatives. Resident PNW Bishop Cedrick D. Bridgeforth announced my appointment to continue to serve as your pastor for the July 2024-June 2025 appointment year. I look forward to what this new year will bring to us and masterpieces that will be created through our ministry together.

Tyler Ikegami and Kai Yamamoto head to JHC!

The Rev. Karen blesses our campers, counselors, and chaperones as they prepare to fly to California for Jr. High Camp.

Summer signals our annual rituals of gathering with friends at Jr. High Camp, Asian Camp and VBS. We just sent and blessed our campers, counselors and chaperones as they journey to Jr. High Camp at Camp Lodestar in Wilseyville, CA. Asian Camp will be in Southern California at Camp Gilmore, located in Calabasas, CA. Blaine is sending eight campers and two chaperones. It’s wonderful to see our Church School kids, youth and young adults meeting new friends, reconnecting with old friends while finding new ways to connect with God.

This year’s VBS times will be on consecutive Sundays: July 28, August 4, 11 and 18 from 10AM-12:30PM. Our theme is Operation Restoration – Mending God’s World. The focus is on mending, repairing, and restoring relationships with God, people, and creation which offers a theologically constructive and empowering message for all. Most of its treatments of scripture illuminate this theme in sound and fruitful ways. Click here to enroll now!

This is the first year Blaine Memorial UMC has attended the Seattle Pride Parade as a reconciling congregation in the United Methodist Church. We continue to work on the outreach, affirmation, and inter-sectional ministry with and for LGBTQIA+ people at Blaine Memorial UMC.

Finally, I give thanks as I remember and honor the legacy of a spiritual giant — the late Rev. James M. Lawson Jr., known as “the architect of the Civil Rights Movement,” who died on June 9, at the age of 95. He served as the pastor of Holman UMC in Los Angeles from 1974-1999 and served as pastor emeritus until his death. I had the chance to meet him while I attended Claremont School of Theology. He deeply influenced my faith by teaching United Methodists how to do public acts of nonviolent protest. The Rev. Lawson could make anyone take off any rose-colored glasses they had on, while believing that change is possible. Without his spiritual guidance, moral example and deep understanding of the principles and practices of nonviolent protest, the Civil Rights Movement as we know it might not have existed. May he rest in power.

With so much going on in the world, those who are brave, and intentional about spreading God’s love, must rise and create better ways of showing love and compassion. As always, as the landscape of our church continues to evolve and change, it’s great to be in community with you. You are such a blessing. You are loved and a child of God. Be the hope and may you be filled with God’s grace!

The Rev. Karen Yokota Love serves as the Senior Pastor of Blaine Memorial UMC.

Sermon Questions

  • How has God used disease and death in your life to strengthen your faith in God?
  • Whom do we know who is sick or needing to be healed?

  • What moment in your life have you felt the most helpless? How did that moment lead you to look to Jesus? How should it have led you to look to Jesus?

This is a great way to start your morning, clear and center your mind, all while connecting with God and your prayer community. Feel free to bring a cup of coffee, tea, and a bite to eat. Hope to see you on Wednesday.
