All are Welcome!

Sermon Questions

  • What fears or divisions in our world today prevent people from truly hearing and understanding one another?
  • How can Christians honor sacrifice and love their country while remaining committed to the gospel’s call to peace and human dignity?
  • Jesus says, “My peace I give to you — not as the world gives.” What does Christ-like peace look like in a world shaped by conflict, fear, and polarization?

Nisei Veterans Committee (NVC) and NVC Foundation Present: 81st Annual Memorial Day Service

Monday, May 25, 2026 | 10-11 a.m.
Lake View Cemetery
1554 15th Ave. E., Seattle, WA

Each year, Blaine Memorial participates in the NVC Memorial Day Service honoring Japanese American and other veterans who gave their lives in service to our country. This year, Rev. Karen Yokota-Love (Blaine Memorial UMC) and Rev. Lisa Ishihara (Queen Anne UMC) will offer the Christian reflection together, and church member Craig Iriye will present a wreath on behalf of Blaine Memorial UMC.

Held annually since 1946, this gathering has become one of the oldest and largest Memorial Day services in the Pacific Northwest. This year is especially significant as we mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.

The service honors the legacy, sacrifice and courage of the Nisei veterans — including those who served in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team/100th Battalion and the Military Intelligence Service (MIS) — many while their families were incarcerated in camps during the war.

The program includes:

• Presentation of colors by Seattle Buddhist Temple Boy Scout Troop 252
• Christian and Buddhist prayers and meditations
• Keynote address
• Floral wreath presentations by community and veteran organizations

The public is warmly invited to attend as we honor those who served and remember those who gave their lives. May peace and justice prevail.

Blaine Memorial UMC’s Church office will be closed on May 26.

This event is co-sponsored by Seattle Tsuru for Solidarity.

Sermon Questions

  • What in this prayer of Jesus gives us hope? What challenges us?
  • What does Christian disunity look like? What does Christian unity look like?
  • When, where, and how do you witness evidence of Christian unity?
  • Jesus prays that his followers may be one with one another; do you have hope and trust in this prayer?
  • What kinds of prayers—such as prayers of lament—could we pray as a community so that by breaking silences together with and for those who are suffering (especially in silence), we might embody the Christian unity Jesus prayed for us to live out today?
  • Recently, UMC News shared a short documentary video regarding the history of our Central Jurisdiction as we journey toward the 2028 General Conference. Watch the video and share your reflections in light of Jesus’ prayer.

Nisei Veterans Committee and NVC Foundation Present: 81st Annual Memorial Day Service

Monday, May 25, 2026 | 10–11 a.m.

Location: Lake View Cemetery, 1554 15th Ave. E., Seattle, WA

Each year, Blaine Memorial participates in the NVC Memorial Day Service. This year, the Rev. Karen Yokota-Love will join the Rev. Lisa Ishihara, a UMC colleague and scholar, in offering the Christian reflection. Blaine Memorial UMC also will present a wreath.

The Nisei Veterans Committee has held a Memorial Day service every year since 1946 to honor Japanese American and other veterans who gave their lives in service to our country. Over the years, it has become one of the oldest and largest Memorial Day services in the Northwest, with several hundred people gathering at the Nisei War Memorial, a 22-foot granite obelisk inscribed with the sites of major campaigns of World War II in Europe and the Pacific, as well as the names of Japanese American service members killed in action during the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the invasion of Grenada. This year bears special significance as we mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Most of the Nisei World War II veterans served in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team/100th Battalion, the most highly decorated unit for its size and length of service in U.S. military history. Others served in the Military Intelligence Service, a unit credited by a member of Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s headquarters staff with shortening the war in the Pacific by two years. Many served in these segregated units while the U.S. government incarcerated their families in concentration camps behind barbed wire. Eighty years later, the Japanese American community and friends still gather to honor the Nisei veterans’ service and loyalty to the country as we strive to continue their legacy of courage and sacrifice. We also honor those who gave their lives in subsequent wars and conflicts around the globe.

The Memorial Day Service will begin with a presentation of colors by Seattle Buddhist Temple Boy Scout Troop 252, followed by prayers and meditations from Christian and Buddhist perspectives, a keynote address, and a presentation of floral wreaths by 15 community and veterans organizations in memory of our fallen heroes. The public is cordially invited to attend and pay their respects. May peace and justice prevail.

Sermon Questions

  • Where have you experienced “love that shows up” in your life — through a caregiver, mentor, friend, or community — and how has that shaped your understanding of God’s love?
  • In what ways have you taken love for granted or overlooked the steady care of others, and how might Jesus’ call to “keep my commandments” reshape how you notice and respond to love in your daily life?
  • Jesus promises, “I will not leave you as orphans.” What does that promise mean for you personally — in seasons of joy, grief, loneliness, or uncertainty — and how might it change the way you live this week?

Mother’s Day Breakfast

May 10, 2026 | 8:30–9:45 a.m. and after worship | Social Hall

Join us as we honor the women and those who identify as women at Blaine Memorial UMC on Sunday, May 10, from 8:30–9:45 a.m. and again after worship in the Social Hall. During this time, we will honor, remember and show our love to our mothers, grandmothers, godmothers, aunts, sisters, cousins, wives, teachers, mentors and all the women in our lives who have influenced and shaped us into the people we are today. Thank you to Howard Nakase for chairing this year’s Mother’s Day breakfast.

Team Blaine prevails! Several members and friends of Blaine Memorial participated in the annual Walk for Rice event held at Seward Park last June.

35th Annual ACRS Walk for Rice

Saturday, May 16, 2026 | 9 a.m. | Seward Park

This year, ACRS will hold the Walk for Rice a month earlier than usual, at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 16, at Seward Park. Team Blaine raised more than $12,000 last year (placing second overall), and this year’s goal is $8,000.

We are off to a strong start but still have a ways to go. Help ACRS support AAPI community members experiencing food insecurity by donating or registering to walk with Team Blaine.

Visit “Team Blaine” at www.walkforrice.org. Thank you for your support!

For students seeking letters of recommendation from Rev. Karen, please request at least two weeks or more before the scholarship deadline.

May 5: Last day for Scholarship RECOMMENDATION letters

Rev. Karen carries many responsibilities and often receives multiple requests for recommendation letters. Last-minute requests — especially those submitted the night before the deadline — can be very difficult to accommodate, as completing a letter depends on her current workload.

To ensure she has enough time to write thoughtful and effective recommendations, please plan ahead and submit your requests well in advance.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Your generous donations make a huge impact on our neighbors!
