Sumida receives Commendation from Min. for Foreign Affairs

By Gail M. Nomura, photos courtesy of the Consulate-General of Japan in Seattle, Emi Suzuki

University of Washington Professor of American Ethnic Studies Emeritus Stephen H. Sumida received the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan Commendation at a ceremony hosted by Makoto Iyori, Consul-General of Japan in Seattle on October 2, 2025. Foreign Minister of Japan Takeshi Iwaya awarded this commendation to Sumida in recognition for his distinguished achievements in promoting academic exchange between Japan and the United States of America and thus contributing to the strengthening of friendly relations between Japan and foreign countries. The commendation particularly highlighted Sumida’s work as chair of the American Studies Association’s ASA-JAAS Project Coordinating Committee which secured grants and funding for and coordinated an exchange of scholars from the American Studies Association (ASA) and the Japanese Association for American Studies (JAAS).

(Second slide) Yuko Iyori, son-in-law Kyle Suzuki, granddaughter Clare Suzuki, Steve Sumida, wife Gail Nomura, daughter Emi Suzuki, granddaughter Alice Suzuki, and Consul General Makoto Iyor.

Sumida has a long record of promoting intellectual exchange between the United States and Japan starting with his serving as an Amherst Fellow teaching at Doshisha University in Kyoto after his graduation from Amherst College in 1968. Later in his career he was a Fulbright Fellow and taught in Japan at Tsuda University and Tokyo Institute of Technology. At the University of Washington, Sumida has hosted and mentored visiting scholars from Japan and other countries.

As president of the Association for Asian American Studies and the first Asian American to serve as president of the American Studies Association he has actively promoted academic exchange between US scholars and Japanese scholars through meetings, conferences, and personal interaction.

In his acceptance speech Sumida spoke of his own personal growth in knowledge of Japan from his living and teaching in Japan, from his first teaching at Doshisha University as a recent college graduate to his teaching as a UW professor in Japan. He also spoke of the deeper understanding of Japan he got from his acting in an ACT series of readings of the American English adaptation of Heike Monogatari, scripted by Philip Kan Gotanda and Yusuf El Guindi, and directed by Kurt Beattie. This was a full circle moment as at his first teaching experience in Japan at Doshisha he had been asked by the famous Japanese scholar and translator Kitagawa Hiroshi to review and critique his 800-page typescript translation into English of The Tale of the Heike. But now through his work on “The Tale of the Heike” English adaptation play he could experience and understand the theme of the Heike Monogatari which he said was “that all phenomena are vanity and evanescence, all prideful striving and ambitions are dreams on a spring night, whirls of dust in the wind…All things must pass. And this I know is a comfort. Peace be with us all.”

Additional speakers at the ceremony were Harvard University Takashima Professor of Japanese Humanities Emeritus Jay Rubin and Sumida’s daughter, Emi Suzuki, president of Sumida Farm. The Hon. Steve Hobbs, Secretary of State of Washington, gave the toast. Many Blaine Memorial UMC members attended this ceremony and enjoyed the generous hospitality of Consul General Iyori.

Born of God when the Holy Spirit lives in us

By Anne Arakaki-Lock

As we anticipate the lighting of the fourth Advent candle, may we all feel the deep love of God – the love that gave us Jesus.

Remember this song? Sing along with me:

Jesus loves me, this I know,

For the Bible tells me so.

Little ones to Him belong;

They are weak, but He is strong.

Yes, Jesus loves me!

Yes, Jesus loves me!

Yes, Jesus loves me!

The Bible tells me so.

Holding my new little granddaughter and singing these words to her, I find myself praying that Malia will grow up always knowing how dearly Jesus loves her. With His love, I know she will find strength and learn to show kindness to others. I trust she will experience joy in her life and be filled with thanksgiving. And when she encounters rough patches, she will know His peace.

“…He has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with His love.”

 – Romans 5:5

“How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”

 – 1 John 3:1

Yes – we are children of God. And He loves us so very much.

Merry Christmas, all.

Volunteers of all ages helped decorate Blaine Memorial UMC during the Greening of Blaine. As we enter the Advent and Christmas season, what are your hopes for the community and the world around you? Is God at work?

Senior Pastor Reflection

Insisting on Hope: Entering Advent with Courage and Joy

By the Rev. Karen Yokota Love, additional photos by Arlene Mitsui

Last Saturday, we ushered in Advent by greening the church. Royal blue cloth and Advent candles sit near the altar, the Christmas tree is decorated with chrismons, and the smell of evergreen wreaths, swag and garland covers the Blaine campus. Thank you to those who volunteered their time and creativity as they decorated and transformed the campus! Thank you to the many elves who worked on this year’s paper cutout craft of an angel whispering, “Do not fear!” It was a joy to begin the season with new and familiar faces as we prepared for the Advent and Christmas season.

Ecumenical faith leaders advocate for SNAP Benefits with US Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal. What are our common beliefs that can bring hope through feeding and uplifting communities in need?

Luke’s Gospel begins the story of Jesus with this opening line: “In the time of Herod…” This detail may seem minor to modern readers, however, it reveals layers of information about the fearful world Jesus entered – one filled with rampant oppression, economic disparity, uncertainty and instability. It’s a world not so unlike our own. Yet throughout the stories of Christ’s birth, we hear the whispers of angels delivering a surprising message: “Do not fear.” When Mary, Joseph, the shepherds and the magi are called into God’s redemptive story, they do not deny their fears – they move through them. They ask questions, hold fast to courage, trust in good news and say, “Here I am, Lord.” When we find ourselves in fearful times, can we acknowledge our fears while also insisting on hope?

Kaze Daiko graced Blaine Memorial UMC with a couple of performances after Sunday Worship Service. Kaze Daiko is a young taiko group based in Seattle teaching communities about resilience through music and to not have fear.

The Rev. Karen Yokota Love tries her hand at taiko drumming.

This Advent series takes seriously the angels’ message and trusts that Christ’s birth truly is “good news of great joy for all people.” The resources look closely at the fear and terror looming in the background during the time of King Herod and invite us to consider the fears we hold now. Fear can divide and paralyze us and can even be used as a tool for oppression. But what if we formed a different relationship with fear? Can we acknowledge fear without letting it rule us? Might we channel our fears into love and action? What if naming our fears helps us see more clearly how God is breaking in and where God is at work?

This Advent, we will be discussing ideas of managing our fears through “What Do You Fear?”, a free resource available at the Church Office.

As we journey through this season together, may your hope become gritty and resilient. This year’s small group Advent book study will use a free devotional from A Sanctified Art, “What Do You Fear?” Free copies are available in the Narthex and in the Church Office. May you remember: hope that trembles is still hope. This season, let us insist on hope and trust that good news is greater than fear. I look forward to discovering great hope with you during this Advent season.

Associate Pastor’s Spiritual Reflection

Associate Pastor Job Pangilinan helped support the delivering of Thanksgiving Meals to Kimball Elementary. Prior to delivery, the volunteers from Blaine Memorial UMC blessed the meals that will help feed those in need.

Associate Pastor’s Spiritual Reflection

Thirty Seconds…A Thanksgiving and Advent Reflection

By Pastor Job Pangilinan, photos by Jesse N. Love and Arlene Mitsui

Associate Pastor Job Pangilinan reflects on ministry, fatigue, and finding Christ in the busy-ness of Advent.

This has been one of those seasons when the pace of ministry feels like a wave that never really recedes. The annual Bazaar was just a foretaste of what was to come. When I thought there would be a pause, the reverse was true. It’s a full time of year:

  • Planning, coordinating, showing up for the congregation
  • Supporting families
  • Preparing worship
  • Leading Blaine Youth Group (BYG) gatherings
  • Writing the script for our upcoming Christmas pageant
  • Caring for our community partners

And somewhere in the middle of all of this was the quiet disappointment of my canceled vacation. I had hoped – even for just a brief few days – to breathe. But instead, the work kept coming. I found myself wrestling with the load day after day, even on weekends, trying to imagine what a real Sabbath could look like when the moment I stop, the work accumulates behind me like rising water. My constant ask of Rev. Karen is, “Tell me when it’s time to panic…” (because as Senior Pastor, I’m sure she’s been here before).

And yet – there was this season of Thanksgiving ministry that held a mirror to everything I had been feeling.

The BYG and their parents gathered for our annual meal preparations for 38 families from Kimball Elementary School. It was one of those moments when the church became a working body – hands chopping, stirring, bagging, baking, laughing, and serving. The apple crisp assembly line was its own miracle: 38 pans completed in one hour, a beautiful chaos of youth energy and parent collaboration. Come baking time, the kitchen came alive again: cinnamon in the air, trays moving and rotating into the ovens. Everyone was just as busy.

Then came the mashed potato party – giant pots, children and parents mashing – the kind of group labor that leaves everyone a little tired but deeply satisfied. Adding to this abundance, the next day ACRS generously provided Costco rotisserie chickens. Through Jerry Lee’s coordination, those chickens arrived as if hand-delivered grace – exactly what was needed to complete the meals for families who count on this support.

It was ministry in motion, the church at its best: multi-generational, joyful, purposeful.

But even with all this good work, the weight of the season followed me. The work is heavy. The expectations stretch far. And the fatigue I feel is real. I am still longing for a Sabbath that doesn’t leave me anxious about the mountain of tasks waiting when I return. I needed an answer.

Then came my moment at ACRS.

Hundreds of people lined up – quietly, patiently – hoping there would be enough food for their families that day. Volunteers moved with kindness and intention. I stepped forward for 30 seconds as volunteers decided to begin due to the heavy turnout – just enough time to offer a blessing over the volunteers and whisper a prayer for the people waiting in line.

Thirty seconds.

But those 30 seconds shifted something in me.

Standing there, the tension inside me loosened. Yes, I am weary. Yes, the load feels heavy. Yes, I want to complain – and sometimes I do. But when I place my own exhaustion beside the reality of people who do not know if they will eat…when I remember the families waiting for the meals we prepared…when I consider the oppressed in our society whose burdens dwarf my own…everything comes into clearer focus.

It does not erase my need for rest.

It does not solve the overload.

It does not restore the vacation I lost.

But it reminds me why we do this.

As long as there are hungry families in our neighborhood, as long as there are youth needing guidance, elders needing companionship, parents needing support, and communities longing for hope, the hands and feet of Jesus are needed. And somehow – even in the exhaustion – there is purpose enough to keep going.

Advent is about readiness – not the frantic readiness of calendar tasks and deadlines, but the holy readiness of a heart awake to the presence of Christ. Jesus’ words in Matthew 25:35-40 are not merely instructions – they are the measure of our discipleship:

“I was hungry…I was a stranger…I was in need…and you showed up.”

Jem Tong, Pastor Job Pangilinan, Lauren, Steve Sofronas, Terri Adolfo, Mr. Abdi Husein, Rev. Karen Yokota Love, and Principal Angela Sheffey-Bogan gather before many bags of Thanksgiving Meals given to families of Kimball Elementary.

The Blaine Youth Group along with parents and volunteers all helped peel apples for apple crisp desserts included in the Thanksgiving Meals bags. Many thanks for the volunteers who supplied chickens, apples, bread, potatoes and more to help supply 38 families in the neighborhood. How do you find hope in the midst of challenging seasons of life?

The apple crisp, the mashed potatoes, the baked chicken, the prayers whispered at ACRS, the youth learning to serve, the parents modeling generosity – these are our Advent lights glowing in a weary world.

So yes, the work is heavy.

Yes, I long for rest.

Yes, we still haven’t found a Sabbath rhythm that restores.

But I also know this: if Christ truly comes to us in the face of the hungry, the tired, the struggling, the overlooked, then Christ is already here. And it is an honor – even in exhaustion – to serve him in a world so desperate for his love.

May we continue with humility, courage, and readiness – because the world is weary, and Christ is coming.

Pastor Job serves as the associate pastor of Blaine Memorial UMC.

Thanksgiving Meals 2025!

How can we as a church answer the needs of our food-insecure families? Blaine Memorial UMC’s faithful volunteers and donors are brought food to Kimball Elementary School through Thanksgiving meals!

Blaine Memorial UMC feeds 128 Individuals through Thanksgiving Meals

As the Thanksgiving and Christmas season continues, so does the need among families in our neighborhood. Although SNAP benefits were restored after this year’s government shutdown, delays remain. As of this publication, many food-insecure families of students who attend Kimball Elementary School (just up the street from our church) are still in need.

Blaine Memorial UMC’s tradition of serving the community continues to inspire our congregation to take action – and this year is no different. Through our Thanksgiving Meals program, we served 128 individuals with 38 sets of store-bought chicken and hand-crafted sides. Each bag included rotisserie chicken, salad, dinner rolls, apple crisp, mashed potatoes and gravy, and fresh fruit. The meals offered not only nourishment for small families, but also a heartfelt opportunity for those struggling to gather around the dinner table.

The Blaine Youth Group (BYG) provided much of the support to craft apple crisps and mashed potatoes with the support of parents and friends.

Meals were delivered to Kimball Elementary on Tuesday, Nov. 25, ahead of Thanksgiving. Families picked up their free meals at the school or receive them through their designated support worker if transportation wasn’t available.

This effort would not have been possible without the support of our Blaine Memorial UMC congregation and friends. The Blaine Youth Group (BYG) raised funds throughout the year – including through a recent bake sale – to help cover costs. We also received a generous donation of Costco rotisserie chickens from our friend Jerry Lee. Parents, friends and young people peeled apples for dessert and prepared mashed potatoes for the event. It was a Spirit-filled expression of how Blaine Memorial UMC cares for the community.

From our mission:

“We value service as a response to and reflection of God’s nature and character. As followers of Jesus Christ, we seek to give our best efforts through an interdependent expression of the spiritual gifts and passions that God has given to every person.”

Scripture instructs us to care for and love our neighbors, particularly those in need:

“Therefore, my beloved, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, because you know that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” -1 Corinthians 15:58

We work to develop a servant’s heart year-round. Putting Christ’s teachings into action – serving and laboring together – sets an example for future service and continues our Blaine tradition.

Our mission continues as we prepare Giving Tree gifts for this community. Follow updates at blaineonline.org and on facebook.com/blainememorialchurch.
